Seems to me some of you are going to have problems with traveling ( some of you). I couldn't agree more. There should be a cull of such postings and another of members who haven't been seen for a certain period of time. If those who have been removed suddenly re-discover their interest, it's easy enough for them to re-join.

I do note, though, that the latest resuscitators are comparative newcomers to this site so perhaps they can be forgiven for expecting their dreams to be fulfilled.

However, Market 79 cannot be forgiven for pointing out the spelling mistake in the original, 3 year old, posting whilst his own grammar leaves much to be desired. A space should follow a full stop and a new sentence should commence with a capital letter.
He, too, deserves punishment, with or without an extraneous 'n'.

i can forgive the lack of capital letters, because there is no automatic capitalisation for posts and replies as there is in most word processing applications, and it's a drag having to go back after typing something to put in all the capitals. is that why e.e.cummins decided not to use them?

Incidentally, Targetarear refers to the poet E.E.Cummings( he rarely signed his name using small case letters and no punctuation). His poems are written in small case letters without punctuation, because he wanted to disturb people's sensibilities. Most scholars regard it as an act of humility on his part, and certainly not as a preferred style of orthography, that he wished others to emulate!

That's the best compliment I've had this life. Youth? I'm fifty nine! Still, they say life begins at forty, so, arguably, I'm only 19. (I wish).

As for capital letters, I understand these have been used to begin sentences for only five hundred years or so, before which lower case was standard.

In my line of business, the use of precise language and correct punctuation are paramount: a comma in the wrong place; a capital letter when lower case is required (or vice versa); a misused word; any of them could be catastrophically expensive. (Hundreds of thousands of pounds).

My knowledge of grammar, punctuation, syntax and all the rest are the product of an education in an excellent secondary modern school, and years of reading articles and features on the English language.

As you will see from this, I prefer the old ways: but I don't see anything wrong with the new, provided the content is clear and precise. To me, a good piece of English that has been written without capitals is to be preferred to a bad piece with them.

And as for workshy, well what can I say? I have worked since the age of 19, when I left Grammar School in 1970, and haven't claimed a penny in benefits.

This thread was started in May 2007 - nearly 3 and a half years ago. She (or he) who posted it originally has not been active on the site since June 2007 - check her/his profile.

The problem is that whenever someone adds a post the thread comes back to the top of the list so people think it is fresh - then they get frustrated and think the site is a waste of time.
